چکیده

14 ________________________________________________________________________ 15 The ca. 1.8 Ga Duck Creek Formation, Western Australia, preserves 1000 m of 16 carbonates and minor iron formation that accumulated along a late Paleoproterozoic 17 ocean margin. Two upward-deepening stratigraphic packages are preserved, each 18 characterized by peritidal precipitates at the base and iron formation and carbonate 19 turbidites in its upper part. Consistent with recent studies of Neoarchean basins, carbon 20 isotope ratios of Duck Creek carbonates show no evidence for a strong isotopic depth 21 gradient, but carbonate minerals in iron formations can be markedly depleted in 13 C. In 22 contrast, oxygen isotopes covary strongly with depth; ! 18 O values as positive as 2‰ 23 VPDB in peritidal facies systematically decline to values of -6 to -16‰ in basinal rocks, 24 * Corresponding author: [email protected] 1 Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Harvard University 2 Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA USA 3 Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University 4 The Agouron Institute 5 Australian Centre for Astrobiology, University of New South Wales, Australia 6 Massachusetts Institute of Technology 7 Jet Propulsion Laboratory 8 Chevron Corp. 9 Curtin University of Technology, Australia

Late Cretaceous marine arthropods relied on terrestrial organic matter as a food source: Geochemical evidence from the Coon Creek Lagerstätte in the Mississippi Embayment.

The Upper Cretaceous Coon Creek Lagerstätte of Tennessee, USA, is known for its extremely well-preserved mollusks and decapod crustaceans. However, the depositional environment of this unit, particularly its distance to the shoreline, has long been equivocal. To better constrain the coastal proximity of the Coon Creek Formation, we carried out a multiproxy geochemical analysis of fossil decapod...

Sulfur-cycling fossil bacteria from the 1.8-Ga Duck Creek Formation provide promising evidence of evolution's null hypothesis.

The recent discovery of a deep-water sulfur-cycling microbial biota in the ∼ 2.3-Ga Western Australian Turee Creek Group opened a new window to life's early history. We now report a second such subseafloor-inhabiting community from the Western Australian ∼ 1.8-Ga Duck Creek Formation. Permineralized in cherts formed during and soon after the 2.4- to 2.2-Ga "Great Oxidation Event," these two bio...

Origin and significance of aromatic hydrocarbons in giant iron ore deposits of the late Archean Hamersley Basin, Western Australia

Late Archean to earliest Paleoproterozoic shales associated with two giant iron ore deposits in the Hamersley Province, Western Australia, contain traces of solvent extractable saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons. The host rocks belong to the 2.5 billion years (Ga) old Mt McRae Shale and Brockman Iron Formation, Hamersley Group, and were collected in mines near Tom Price and Newman (Mt Whalebac...

WARM TO COLD WATER CARBONATE FORMATION DURING THE ORDOVICIAN AND THE JURASSIC: EXAMPLES FROM IRAN, AUSTRALIA, AND ENGLAND

Isotope data from bulk carbonates, micrite, marine calcite cements, non-skeletal grains and brachiopods indicate deposition of a wide spectrum of warm to cold water carbonates during the Ordovician and the Jurassic. This isotopic interpretation is supported by warm to cold climatic models proposed for the Ordovician and the Jurassic. These carbonates formed during the Greenhouse mode (condition...

SHRIMP U–Pb dating of diagenetic xenotime in the Stirling Range Formation, Western Australia: 1.8 billion year minimum age for the Stirling biota

The Stirling Range Formation in southwestern Australia contains discoidal fossils previously linked to the late Neoproterozoic Ediacaran biota and possible trace fossils interpreted to have been made by vermiform, mucus-producing, motile organisms. The age of the sedimentary succession was recently reported to be between 2.0 and 1.2 billion years old, based on U–Pb geochronology of detrital zir...
